Even with Brook Lopez’s (r.) 20 points, the Nets are no match for Karl-Anthony Towns and the Timberwolves.

The Minnesota Timberwolves didn’t look like a team that had lost eight of their last 10 on Sunday afternoon. It helped to be playing the lowly Brooklyn Nets.

Big men Karl-Anthony Towns and Gorgui Dieng had their way with the Nets in the paint in a 100-85 Brooklyn loss, helped along by the deft passing of Ricky Rubio, who finished the game with 15 assists.

In his return to Brooklyn, Kevin Garnett was his usual animated, unrelenting, loud self, despite really not doing much of anything. He attempted one shot and played 10 minutes.

The worst shooting three-point team in the NBA wasn’t afraid of launching from beyond the arc at the start, but the Nets missed all seven attempts in the first quarter.

A younger, more athletic Timberwolves team dominated the paint, with Rubio’s six first quarter assists leading the charge as he continuously dumped off to his big men for easy baskets.

Andrew Wiggins had nine quick points in the opening quarter and Dieng, coming off the bench for Garnett, gave the Wolves a spark with 10 points down low.

Brook Lopez, who finished with a team-high 20 points, kept the Nets close at the start, hitting four of his first five shots, but he was pulled late in the quarter and Brooklyn lost its rim protection and biggest scoring threat.

With Rubio on the bench, the Timberwolves offense was stunted at the start of the second. Lopez tied the game at 36 and capped a 13-2 run. It was the only life the Nets would show in a languid loss.

Minnesota head coach Sam Mitchell went back to his sure-handed point guard and Rubio immediately shifted the momentum with three quick assists, one on a no look to Dieng that had Brooklyn’s defense flummoxed.

After that it was all Wolves, as the Rubio-Towns combination continued to plague the Nets.

Brooklyn hung around in the third, giving themselves a chance to make a run trailing by 10 going into the final quarter.

But they were stagnant in the fourth and there were few hints of a late rally. Towns continued his dominance in the paint, finishing with a game-high 24 points and the Nets dropped their fifth straight.
